Hair Care 101

  1. What to do and not to do on Wet Hair
    - Do not brush hair when wet instead use a pick or wide tooth comb
    - Do not put in tight pony tail or twist in towel
    - Do not use (metal) heat i.e. flat iron or curling iron A blow dryer is okay.
Reason: Hair stretches 50% more when wet than when dry, therefore you leave stress points (which will break over time) or even break hair off when doing above things on wet hair.

  2. How to Shampoo and condition
    - Shampoo Scalp
    - Condition ends
    - Use small amount nickel size of shampoo and rub just scalp
Reason: As the water and soap runs down the hair strand while you rinse, Surfactants (in Shampoo) will grab any dirt or oil on end of hair and take it off. Conditioner will make scalp oily or feel oily if put directly on scalp so focus it on mid-shaft and ends of hair.
-Wash every other day to reduce stress on hair

  3. When (and how) to use Conditioning Treatments and Styling Products
    - I recommend a treatment (moisture or protein) at least every 2 weeks on virgin hair. Virgin hair is hair that has not been chemically treated (I.e. perms, color, and highlights.)
    - I recommend a treatment (usually protein) every week on weak or damaged hair (i.e. Permed, colored, razored, extreme heat styling everyday)
    - Always use a drying aide (mouse, gel, or styling lotion) to protect against heat and cut down on drying time.
    - Use a heat protecting spray or lotion before curling, &/or flat ironing.
    - Longer is not always better. In other words, turn up heat and keep it moving on the hair do not leave heat in same spot too long or you risk burning hair.
-Try to use water based products to reduce look and feel of oiliness, it is also easier to get out of hair. If you use too many oily products, you will have to use a clarifying shampoo which can strip your hair if used too often. You can tell if it is water based by looking at the ingredients and if water if water is the first one, it is water based so it will be water solvable. (It will come out with water alone.)
